TCM Alert: Barry Levinson's "Avalon" (1990)

Barry Levinson's Avalon, the third entry in his "Baltimore" quartet that also includes Diner, Tin Men and Liberty Heights will be airing on Turner Classic Movies in the early morning hours this Sunday February 21st as the second part of a double-feature with Diner.

Avalon tells the story of a Polish-Jewish immigrant family assimilating into pre/post war America. As the second generation of European immigrants coming of age in the nineties, stories of my family running their bakery in Detroit from the '40s to '60s were fascinating conversations - I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall to see what life was like for my grandparents, father, aunts and uncles in that era. With the American and immigrant experience drastically changed in the last 20 years, films like Avalon are time capsules of bygone eras.
