Year in Music 2022

If you seek it out, there is plenty of great new music waiting to be discovered. As always, I have my list of favorite albums and songs to share this year.

But my favorite audio from 2022 was easily The Pine Walk Collection, a treasure of cassettes recently found in the milk crates of a home in the Fire Island Pines. These recorded DJ sets are an odyssey, whisking you away to tea dances and summer soirees spanning 1981 to 1999. It covers a monumental period in LGBT history and the tracks timeline the heartbreaks and triumphs.

But most of all, the music captured on these tapes is fantastic, representing some of the best DJ sets I've ever heard. They inspired me to rethink how I put together playlists, to lean into pure joy. While my curations could never match the genius heard on these tapes, I hope my annual playlist will put a smile on someone's face.  

As for 2022, there were plenty of songs destined to be on mixtapes for generations to come.
